GREEN JOB - Wildlife Project Officer
I am the Project Officer for Afonydd Menai, a Menter Môn project, that aims to protect water voles on Anglesey. Water voles are our fastest declining mammal, however, we are fortunate enough to live in an area that is considered a stronghold for this species. My job involves tackling the big threats to water voles – habitat loss leading to isolated populations and the non-native predator, American Mink. A key part of the job is to know where water voles currently exist and so during the breeding season, I spend much of my life in waders, in wonderful habitat looking for signs of water voles (feeding stations and latrines).
I love my job because I can see the benefits it is having, whether that is through a new and exciting pond being dug that turns into a haven for water voles, water voles popping up in an area after American mink have been removed or through inspiring new people to learn and care about water voles, a species that most people haven’t heard about before finding us. I also get to spend plenty of time outside exploring random parts of Ynys Môn and North Gwynedd.
