Llwyn Isaf

Llwyn Isaf Landfill is located 2 km NW of Bryncir in Gwynedd and consists of 2 areas which have been landfilled since the early 1980s, with a total household and commercial waste input of approximately 600,000 tonnes, plus an area of improved grassland making up a total of 32 acres.

The wet meadow on the landfill surface has been enhanced and improved and enriched resulting in an explosion in wildlife abundance. 15,000 trees and shrubs have been planted in improved grassland and expanding hedgerows, which created connected mosaic habitat across the site. Four new ponds/wetlands have been added resulting in a profusion of aquatic species. The wildflower meadows are already a highly productive haven for pollinators and small mammals, and a significant number of bird and bat boxes have been placed in trees across the site.

Hedgerows and woodland provide food and shelter for many species, they also act as essential corridors for wildlife to travel. We have planted hedgerow trees and shrubs in specific areas to help link habitat patches. Along with that we have also installed 25 bird boxes, 25 bat boxes and 2 barn owl boxes.

It is estimated that 97% of wildflower rich meadows have been destroyed since the 1930s. We have established 16.5 acres of wildflower grassland and meadows which are essential for wildlife including bees, birds, butterflies and bugs.

Native woodlands are critical in the fight against climate change and nature loss. Providing new essential habitat for nature to flourish is essential. We have created multiple new habitat areas and planted ‘the right tree in the right place’ - 15,000 trees and hedgerow shrubs have been planted across the site to help lock up carbon, reduce pollution and improve water retention on site to help prevent flooding.

Half a million of Britain’s ponds have been lost over the last hundred years. We have created new wetland habitats of varying depths and have reprofiled existing soakaways. Our ponds are a unique biodiversity resource, rich in species of plants, invertebrates and amphibians.
